One of my favorite parts of working with musicians is creating a concept for their new album and the promotional images. When Lerin and Andrew told me that their new album was called “The Dead of Winter”, I was excited about the creative possibility that offers.
How do you brainstorm the best concept you ask?! Easy, sit down with the whole team involved. So that is exactly what we did. Hearing a designers view, musicians vision, and throwing in your thoughts for making it come alive is what it’s all about. I LOVE IT!!
The name offered us so many thought provoking directions, but we landed on this idea of the darkness that is within us all. Also, the ghostlike sides of us all and how it represents our internal struggles.
I love anything that feels ethereal. So as you can imagine, making this concept come to life became my mission.
Photographically, I shot the focused portion of them together first. It is always tricky adding elements to an image that are not “as shot”, such as the blurry portion you see. After the focused portrait, I snapped them individually in motion to create the blurry effect. Directing them to stay completely still except the moving body parts achieves partial blur.
I am so happy with how it all turned out! Go have a listen!! You will fall in love and want to play it on repeat ;).
